CFIA warns of possible salmonella in spinach

p A group of Quebec doctors has urged the province’s professional order to reconsider its proposal to tolerate assisted suicide in appropriate circumstances. More than 35 million people around the world are living with Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia, according to the most in-depth attempt yet to assess the brain-destroying illness — and it’s an ominous forecast as the population ages. A study confirming fewer people die in !–more– late summer and early fall suggests it’s not all about the lack of extreme heat or cold, but perhaps also due to a combination of sunshine and time off.
The first study of swine flu vaccine in children suggests kids over 10 will only need one shot but kids younger will need two. A charter devised by Canadians outlining the ethical principles that should guide international stem cell research is being presented Tuesday at the World Stem Cell Summit in Baltimore.

Alberta pigs likely infected with flu from worker: CFIA official

Alain Poirier, Quebec’s director of public health, said the virus had been found in a child who had travelled to Mexico with his parents. Officials believe students who went on a school trip to Mexico carried the infection back home. Five of those infected are female, including one child. CFIA warns about more peanut products

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has added another 21 products to the growing recall list because the peanuts they contain may have been contaminated with salmonella.
Consumers should not eat the products, because Peanut Corp. of America has recalled them due to salmonella contamination.
“This is an ongoing food safety investigation,” the CFIA said Saturday, adding it is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to remove all the contaminated (more…)

Avian flu detected in southern B.C.: CFIA

Several Abbotsford poultry farms were under a precautionary quarantine on Friday after a suspected outbreak of avian influenza was detected on a commercial turkey farm.
An H5 avian flu virus has been found in a commercial turkey farm in B.C.’s Fraser Valley, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency confirmed Saturday.
The federal agency said tests to date indicate that the strain involved in this case is “low pathogenic.”

Leaks prompt CFIA to investigate juice boxes

Jennifer DeGroot and her children Johnny and Jessica, who brought a ‘stinky’ juice box to her mom in June.
When Jennifer Degroot bought a case of 40 juice boxes on May 31, she had no idea she was buying anything other than a convenient drink for her two children, Johnny, 8, and Jessica, 5.
A few days later, her daughter brought her one of the juice boxes, saying it “smelled stinky.”

CFIA to launch new listeria testing protocols

Canada’s food watchdog says it will impose more stringent regulations that force food companies across the country to test their deli meats for listeria.
As part of an ongoing joint investigation into food safety, the CBC and Toronto Star learned that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has drafted new testing requirements in the wake of a deadly outbreak that killed at least 20 people and prompted the country’s largest food recall.
