Full CT scans improve chances of survival for severely injured: study

It’s not clear the decrease in the expected death rate resulted from fewer missed injuries, earlier diagnosis of injuries leading to fewer deaths from hemorrhage, or better outcomes for traumatic brain injury, Timothy Fabian of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis said in a journal commentary accompanying the study. “Our results show the importance of having a CT scanner near the trauma room,” the study’s authors concluded. No point to routine X-rays, scans for low back pain, review finds

In this week’s edition of the medical journal The Lancet, Dr. Michael Kochen of the department of general practice at the University of Göttingen in Germany, agreed that patient expectations need to be addressed, since exposure to radiation doses from X-rays or CT scans is an issue. “We need to identify back pain assessment and educational strategies that meet patient expectations and increase satisfaction, while avoiding unnecessary imaging.
